Tree planting II phase ( 96 th ICAR Foundation day, July 16,2024) at farmer's field in Chirakkara Panchayat. Panchayat President Smt. Sajaila T R inaugurated the tree planting programme . Sri. Dileep Haridas(Ward member) and Sri.Anil Kumar (President Akshara Library) delivered felicitations and vote of thanks by Smt. Shilpa S (Agril.officer) . A session on integrated crop management in Banana(Nedran) was handled by Dr. Saroj Kumar V

( Asst.Prof.Horticulture). Farmers, MGNRES workers,members of the Akshara Library, Chirakkara and staff of KVK attended the programme. A total of 50 participants attended the programme.

About the Event: 

The Nineteenth Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of KrishiVigyan Kendra Kollam was organised on 9-2-2024. Dr. Bini Sam, Professor and Head, KVK Kollam welcomed the delegates. Opening remarks was delivered by Dr. Jacob John, Director of Extension, KAU and Special address by Dr. K. Thimmappa, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, ATARI Bengaluru. Action taken report on previous SAC, Overall progress report and action plan for forthcoming season and salient technical achievements was presented by Dr. Bini Sam. This was followed by a lively discussion by the SAC members; the members congratulated KVK for its activities and also guided KVK by giving constructive suggestions in their activities for the forthcoming season.

Shr. Saji N S, Sreemangalam, Areeplachy P O, Kollam  who was the millionaire farmer awardee of ICAR representing Kollam district was honoured by Dr. K. Thimmappa, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, ATARI Bengaluru and a short video of our millionaire farmer was also released. This was followed by leaflet release under NABARD project , Natural farming and Nutrigarden (16 nos) and CD (1 no) and short videos were also unveiled. The august gathering included PAO, Kollam, ADR Vellayani, Principal Scientist from CTCRI, Thiruvanthapuram;  Programme Coordinator, KVK Thiruvanthapuram; Programme Executive, AIR and Scientists from FSRS and KVK Kottayam, ATMA Kollam, DPD, LEAD Bank manager, VFPCK Manager; and representatives from other allied departments of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries and district Industries Department, Kudumbashree, Poverty alleviation unit, and progressive farmers (3 nos) and agrientreprenures (1 nos) . Twenty five members attended the meeting.The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Bindu Podikunju. The meeting came to an end at 2.30 pm.

Objective: Inauguration of Automatic Weather Station and Distribution of Coconut Climbing Machine.

About the Event: The MP, Adv.K.Somaprasad has inaugurated the Automatic Weather Station ( AWS)  which was  installed under District Agromet Unit (DAMU) of KVK, Kollam and distributed the Coconut Climbing machine to the trainees of "Empowering Women and Rural Youth in Agro Technologies"- Annual State Plan 2021-22.The programme started with the welcome speech of Mrs. Isabella Job (SMS, DAMU) under the chairmanship of Shri. K HarshaKumar ( Vettikkavala Block Panchayat President). Dr. Bini Sam , Professor and Head , KVK Kollam presented  the scheme explanatory report and the felicitation speech was given by   Dr.Joy M, Professor and Head, FSRS,Sadanandapuram. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Bindu Podikunju, Assistant Professor, KVK Kollam.

About the Event: The programme Creating and sustaining 'Green Space' in homesteads through school children was inaugurated virtually by the Hon' ble Vice Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University Dr. R Chandra Babu on 27 th May 2021 through google meet online platform.Dr. Jiju P Alex , Director of Extension Kerala Agricultural University delivered the welcome address and vote of thanks to the function was given by Dr. Bini Sam , Professor and Head KVK Kollam. A webinar on 'Tuber crop cultivation'  by  Dr. Poornima Yadav P I, Assistant  Professor , KVK Kollam. After the virtual session , the green space kit  which includes high yielding varieties of  Tuber crops, vegetable seedlings and seeds along with critical inputs like biocontrol agents and biofertilizers were handed over to the agri club student members of the GHSS Sadanandapuram.

World Water Day Celebration

KVK Kollam celebrated World Water Day (Theme Valuing Water) by organizing an array of programmes like awareness classes, quiz competition for school children and field visits to the plots of soil and water conservation (vetiver and geotextiles ). The programme was inaugurated by Sri. Ajith Kumar P U, Asst. Director of Agriculture, Vettikkavala and presided over by Dr.Bini Sam, Professor and Head, KVK Kollam. The key note address was given by Sri. Mohanlal B, State Agriculture Award Winner (Best Teacher) for the year 2020, Govt. VHSS, Sadanandapuram. Dr. Bindu M R Professor and Head, FSRS Sadanandapuram felicitated the programme. The state award winners were honored by handing over trophies. Three awareness programmes on Climate and Water, soil and water conservation and rain water harvesting were organized and handled  by Dr. Poornima Yadav P I, Asst. Professor (Agronomy) and Dr. Bini Sam Professor and Head, KVK Kollam. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Lekha M. Quiz competition was conducted for the school children and distributed participation certificates. A total of 90 participants were attended the programme.

Inauguration of Protein Park

Objective: Inauguration of Protein Park - ‘Protein Parks’ for Food and Nutritional Security and for sustainable soil health.

About the Event: The Kendra popularized the sustainability of rice- rice- pulse cropping system which emphasizes the need of pulse cultivation as an integral part in different agro ecological units under a State Plan Project (2018-19) entitled ‘Establishment of Protein Park in the rice growing tracts of Kollam district for food and nutritional security with special emphasis on soil health’ which helped to increase the production of pulses in the district. In order to enhance the farmers’ income, the Kendra established a Mini Dal Mill for easy, efficient and cheap post harvest handling and processing of pulses especially blackgram for better market price. The Hon. Minister for Department of Agriculture Development & Farmers' Welfare Adv. V. S Sunilkumar inaugurated (online mode) on 25th January 2021.

World Soil Day

About the Event: A webinar on ' Soil health for healthy people' , organized by KVK, Kollam through online platform, 43 participants which include farmers and Agriculture Department Officials.The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Soniya V.R Project Director, ATMA,Kollam. 35 soil health cards were handed over to Smt. Tissy Raichel Thomas, Agriculture Officer, Kulakkada by Dr.Bini Sam, Professor and Head KVK, Kollam for distributing same to farmers.

Gandhi Jayanthi celebration

About the Event: KVK Kollam organized special lectures on the Gandhian Philosophy on Agriculture, Swachhta and Women Empowerment in online plat form and on campus. Dr. L. Vijai, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Government College for Women, Thiruvanathapuram was delivered the lecture on “Gandhian Philosophy on Agriculture” through online platform. 45 farmers (online platform) and 16 KVK staff were participated. He concluded that Gandhian model of Agriculture is one of the best models of sustainable development. “To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves.“ - This statement from Gandhi has a lot to learn for one to understand the basic philosophy behind farming.

KVK staff cleaned the premises and surrounding areas of KVK building as part of the celebrations. Programme Coordinator talked about the life history of our “Father of Nation-Mahatma Gandhiji” and remembered his sacrifices towards the nation in getting freedom. She initiated cleaning activities. A total of 10 KVK staff participated in the event. The cleaning activity yielded a better practice among the staff in respect of their personal discipline and to spread the same among the society. The programme ended with a thought in everybody’s mind that cleanliness is next to godliness and service to mankind is the first step towards reaching it.

KVK Kollam planted sapling of Kera Sree hybrid Coconut seedling in KVK farm  following the proper protocols and social distancing norms. A total of 10 KVK staff participated in the event.

Smt. Sreelatha, SMS ( Home Science) , ICAR-CMFRI, KVK Ernakulam talked about Mahatma Gandhi’s Views on Women Empowerment. Mahatma Gandhi played a vital role in bringing revolutionary changes in the status of women in the first half of the twentieth century. He believed in the liberalization and all-round development of humanity which was not possible without the emancipation of Indian women who were and still are the most suppressed and oppressed section of the society from various aspects of social life. Gandhi always stressed on women upliftment because they constituted the section responsible for future citizens of India. She had taken a class on Entrepreneurship development in fish processing for SC/ ST women farmers at KVK, Kollam. A total of 20 women farmers were participated in the training.

Smt. Shamsiya A H,  SMS ( Home Science) ,KVK Kollam discussed the role of women in the freedom struggle especially during the Gandhian phase. A total of 20 women farmers were participated.

 

NUTRI FEST 2020

About the Event: The Government of India is celebrating POSHAN MAAH in September 2020. To give special emphasis on POSHAN, 17 September 2020 has been chosen for conducting various programs by each KVK, including one training program, distribution of vegetable seeds and awareness creation at district level. IFFCO will collaborate to organize the event on 17 Sept 2020.

Objective: The Poshan Maah programme was organized in online and on campus.150 Aganwadi workers and 40 farm women are participated.Smt.J. Mercy Kutty Amma,Hon' Minister for Fisheries,Harbour Engg and Cashew industries inagurated the programme through online platform. Dr. R. Chandrababu, Hon'able Vice Chancellor delivered keynote address,Dr.Jiju P Alex,DE,KAU welcomed the gathering and presented the report,Smt.Tiju Raichel Thomas,District Programme Officer, ICDS and Head of Farming Systems Research attend the function. Hindi Diwas
