National Campaign on Poshan Abhiyan and Tree Plantation

Food and nutrition security continues to be a matter of grave and growing concern for India. Despite being the second largest producer of food, India is home to the world’s second largest undernourished population. Under nutrition leads to long-term effects, including cognitive and growth deficits and reduced immunity to infections. The Government of India has taken significant steps for providing food security and combating malnutrition over the past four decades. Kerala is known to be the role model for health and development indicators but the state is facing a double burden of malnutrition as a major challenge in the health sector.
KVK Kollam celebrated "National Campaign on Poshan Abhiyan and Tree Plantation" on 17 September 2022 with special lectures on Scientific cultivation of cool season vegetables, Production Technology of nutri-cereals ( millets) and their role on human health and Nutrigarden for nutritional security. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Bini Sam, Professor and Head, KVK, Kollam. The classes were handled by Dr. Saroj Kumar, SMS (Horticulture), Smt. Neeraja C R, SMS (Agronomy) and Smt. Shamsiya AH, SMS (Community Science). Dr. Bindu Podikunju, SMS (Agrl Extension ) proposed vote of thanks. IFFCO provided saplings of fruit plants and 100 seed packets of vegetable for distribution to farmers. A total of 100 farmers have attended the programme. Each farmer was distributed with one vegetable seed packet, Red lady Papaya seedling and Tissue culture banana seedling of Nendran variety. KVK Kollam planted 10 numbers of Red lady Papaya seedlings and Tissue culture banana seedling of Nendran variety in farm land of KVK. The event was conducted successfully with whole hearted participation.
